Steps To Making a Film.

I researched into the processes of film making, so that I knew what steps I myself had to take when it came to making my own film. By doing this I will be able to make sure that absolutely everything is completed to the best quality.

D
EVELOPMENT.
This is where a story is found and script written up. The blueprint could come from a book. play, another film or it could be an original idea. After the storyline and underlying message is thought of, the producer works with scriptwriters to create a synopsis and script. Details descriptions are included within this, to create moods, character mannerisms and sketches to help visualise all key points. Next, a screenwriter will re write and process the original idea to develop the storyline further. At this time, a film distributor may be contacted to discuss the film's potential and its suitability for an audience. It is now, the producer creates a pitch to present to any possible investors, if successful a contract will be signed and the next stage is pre production. The film should by this point have a clear target audience and distributing marketing strategy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PRE PRODUCTION.
Pre production is where the film is designed and fully planned. The production company is created here and the production is storyboarded and visualised by the help of illustrators and concept artists. A production budget is also thought up. A crew is hired (the size of the crew depends on the nature of the film compared to small independent films)

Typical crew positions.
The Director - responsible for the story, creative decisions and actors.
Assistant Director - in charge of the shooting schedule and production.
The Casting Director - in charge of finding actors to fill the roles.
The Location Manager - Finds and manages film locations.
The Composer - Creates new music for the film (post production usually)
The Costume Designer - Makes the clothing for the characters.
Hair and Make Up Artists - Create certain looks for the characters.
The Storyboard Artist - Helps create visual images to help the director.
The Choreographer - Creates and co-ordinates the movement.
(typically for musicals, but can also be fight choreography)

PRODUCTION.
The film is created and shot, with more crew being recruited at this stage. Many takes are over shot, to make sure they have extra footage if needed. A script supervisor will note all technical problems and keep an eye on any continuity issues. A report is made after every day of shooting to make sure all schedules are kept to. Sometimes crew can gather to review the days footage to see how it went, and if any changes need to be made. A wrap party could be held at the end of the shoot to congratulate and thank everybody involved.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

POST PRODUCTION.
Here, whatever has been shot is assembled by an editor. The original camera work is converted and developed ready for being processed by an editing software. Sound is also synced to the picture frames. A film editor works with the director to create a rough cut of the film, to select the best shots to use for the final cut. Once the best shots have been selected a flawless version is created by shortening shots and scenes to create the storyline that was produced at the beginning. This is then shown and approved by the director once again. It is here, where the film is usually previewed by a select target audience and any feedback is taken into account, this may result in re-shooting or editing the film that has just been produced.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DISTRIBUTION AND EXHIBITION.
This is the final stage where the film is released to cinema or occasionally straight to DVD. As required, the film is duplicated to send to many different cinema institutions. Press kits and posters and other advertising merchandise are published and the film is advertised on television with the use of a trailer. A launch party, press release, film festivals and interviews are other ways of advertising and distributing the movie. During to technological change, almost every film also has its own website. The films plays the cinemas and the DVD is usually released 17 weeks later. The distribution rights for the film, DVD and merchandise is usually sold for worldwide production and the distributor and production companies usually share the profits.
